DISTRACTED MIND

In this world we live in,there are innumerable daily distractions that can make us aimless & wasting precious time. Let’s observe it a little closely. From the time we wake up, even before up from bed we have many preoccupations about what & how to do things, face people and handle day to day chores. for eg; a school going child has worries about completing home work, attending classes, handling peer pressures and so on; youngsters about career, future and relational issues to quote a few. More distractions are for adults and they end up thinking (some call it multi-tasking) work completion, budget planning, social interactions so on.

These are daily requirements, how can we call them distractions? They end up as distractions when we think of one while doing another activity and ending up some how completing or meeting requirements. Distracted mind cannot meet quality, one can just complete the task. What results we can expect? half-done job. Instead if one can think & do one task at a time, one’s productivity can be maximum. How it is possible while we have so much to complete each day? Possible if you plan ahead, organize and follow rule of MODERATION in all task achievement. May not sound encouraging for aspirants who quickly want to climb up the ladder of competition. Another distraction COMPETING, with whom & for what?

Each one of us has our unique capabilities. Focus on our strengths & giving our best, instead of running for what one is not good at. Making one’s interest/ aptitude as a career saves a lot of run around. Then you will put your heart in that & invariably will do your best. Keep some free time on daily basis to run through your daily done routine. Plan better for next day. Golden rule is always plan less than what you think you can handle, if you can do more than planned it will give you ”feel good” like a self pat on your back. Being one-pointed & aim for quality makes you feel happy & satisfied at end of each day.🙏

Let’s think about our education system

How many parents today are convinced about our education system? While the entire world is changing and evolving rapidly, our education system seems to stand where it was.

Education or learning is a lifelong process. It does not restrict itself to school or college or the acquisition of degrees. Those are only to win your daily bread. The real purpose of education should be gaining knowledge in an area of interest.

Education or schooling for children should be a pleasant journey to figure out their interests, aptitude and skills and building their life on them for the future. Education is not a tool for to fulfil or meet the unmet wishes of parents. Let us be sensible as parents and nourish the interested areas in our children which can promote life long joyous learning for our future generation. Change has to start from an individual, then it slowly moves to cover a society. It is not really required that we have to follow people around us always and make our children suffer. Instead, identify the interests of your children and nourish those interests for their future careers.

Emotional Balance

Balancing your emotions and reasoning (logic) are like two sides of the same coin. Emotions whether positive (happiness, relaxed) or negative (anger, redness, fear, tension) makes one stirred up or shakes one’s whole being till you express them in some form. Similarly, logic, reasoning or practical problem solving is equally important to handle daily short term & also future long term problems. Both emotions and reasoning have to be balanced.

If one is too emotional, then one might not be rational and vice versa. It is always better to be practical but one should also be able to connect emotionally. The so called emotionally balanced person can live life to the fullest than the extremes of too emotional or too rational or logical people. Too emotional or too logical may disturb one’s smooth sailing.

DESIRING HAPPINESS

We all desire happiness. Some by gaining material possessions, others by socializing, some by doing activities alone. However, over a period of time all these change, lose meaning and search for happiness starts again. Basis for happiness is not collecting baggages (material or emotional). Then what gives us happiness? It varies with each person but we all in common desire happiness.

To achieve happiness one needs to be in constant search by self-enquiry & facing life as it unfolds, be willing to change & be open to recieve unexpected life happenings on this journey. Then happiness discovers you or rather you discuss happiness.

Role of Art & Art Therapy

Role of Art & Art Therapy in the Holistic Development of Children and Psychological Healing of Clients with Emotional Issues

A brief descriptive summary of the Workshop on Art Therapy held on April 14, 2018

Art, Art classes, Painting sessions, Summer Art Classes! What are they all about? How do they help or benefit the growth and development of children at all ages?

Art can help children improve their communication skills, their social interaction and emotional and physical development.

Are art classes different from Art Therapy? Who can benefit from Art Therapy?  What activities are involved in Art Therapy?

Art Therapy is the deliberate use of art to address psychological and emotional needs. Art Therapy uses the media of art and the creative process to help in areas such as, but not limited to, fostering self-expression, creating coping skills, managing stress and strengthening a sense of self.

Art includes visual (like painting) and expressive arts (like music, clay work, poetry, dance, sand therapy and drama/theatre). Art is different from Art Therapy. Art Therapy involves the use of art for psychological counselling to treat developmental (mental or intellectual limitations), medical conditions (cancer, dementia), and resolution of unexpressed emotional conflicts. Art Therapy can also be used to manage troubled behaviors (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, self-injurious behaviors, anger issues in children), building interpersonal skills (socially shy, introvert temperament), regulating emotions in stressful situations (occupational, academic, career related areas) and to achieve insight of more troubled emotions (in abuse, loss of loved on, failure etc)

Art Therapy has several benefits.

Some of these may be physical like building strength in arms, hands and fingers (in young babies/toddlers, in those with weak hand or limb muscles) by activities like holding crayons, paint brushes, pencils.

Art Therapy also helps in sensory exploration, as a fun filled, pressure free, pleasurable activity of creating things that are colorful.

Art Therapy also helps in improving eye-hand and motor co-ordination.

For preschoolers, the creation of art maybe a big accomplishment as they enjoy the process of involving in art by representing real or imagined objects. This helps them develop their thinking process and imagination.

For school going children, Art may help in preparation or further improvement of writing skills and better motor control of the finger grasp. These children can also develop a sense of sharing, responsibility, social skills development and social interactions as they work in groups. Art also helps improve observation skills necessary for life and academics, helps them to interact or be more sensitive to nature and the surrounding environment. Art also helps them share their experiences, express or verbalize their feelings and helps them improve their self-esteem.

Art Therapy can include activities like painting, drawing, sketching, doodling or visual arts. Art Therapy can also include activities of movement or expression like music, dance, drama, role plays, and sand therapy.

Art Therapy facilitates positive change by involving in the creation of something- productivity as an achievement in depression. Art Therapy can also be used as a distraction in obsessive compulsive behaviors shifting the focus away from the obsessive compulsive behavior.

Art Therapy can also help with the ventilation of emotions that are difficult to express using words especially in conditions of anxiety, abuse, or anger/acting out in children as well as in adults.

Art Therapy thus allows an individual to get in touch with their feelings that they find difficult to express otherwise.

Art Therapy modifies the physiology and structure of the brain and leads to a more flexible, adaptable individual. The therapy works with multiple senses (vision, touch, smell, hearing) in addition to muscle movements and social interactions with others. Art Therapy can thus help to heal an individual mentally, emotionally, and physically while they build skills to cope with the pressures of life.

At our center, Manasvin’s Center for Marital and Family Therapy, we use art therapy effectively as a psychological healing method.

We have an artist (trained from Shantiniketan) who works individually and through group sessions. Art Therapy sessions are customized to the needs of each client based on inputs from a trained clinical psychologist and includes visual arts (painting, drawing, sketching) and expressive arts like Music Therapy (Guitar, Flute), Work with Clay, Sand Therapy, Role Plays, Poetry and Story writing and telling sessions.

What is Family Therapy?

When more than one member of a family are seen together in a therapy setting, it is called Family Therapy. The meeting of a couple, a parent and a child, siblings, or a multi-generation family with a family therapist all fall within the scope of family therapy.

When is family therapy indicated? Family therapy is indicated when the focus of therapy or counselling is related to changing or addressing unhealthy interactions between family members, aimed at improving the family functioning as a unit or improve functioning of individual members of the family.

Family therapy can be applied or approached for variety of conditions. Therapy can be used for or aimed at resolving difficulties between couple such as marital dissatisfaction, sexual or intimacy difficulties, therapy aimed at overcoming differences parents and their grown up children, or to address problems in the behavior of a family member and the consequent effects on other family members.

How does family therapy help? Family therapist focuses on the functioning of the family as a unit by careful and objective observations made while family members interact with each other in a therapy setting. In a family relationship, the relation is considered as a product of interactions happening between members as a process. For example, if a person addicted to alcohol reasons that his or her consumption is due to stress created within the family, the family members may reason that the stressful environment is created by the person’s alcoholism. The reasoning in this instance runs in circles with it being difficult to establish which came first- the stress or the alcoholism. Similarly, if a parent sees his child has a troublesome behavior, the child may reason that the parent never took time to understand their views. In a family therapy setting, the process of circular reasoning is carefully interpreted and the family given feedback to work out towards a more workable solution. The functioning of a family together will be the focus of counselling in a family therapy setting rather than focusing on changing an individual person. That means, all members are expected to change to have a possible resolution rather than holding onto or focusing on one member alone as a reason for difficulty.

Family therapy strengthens emotional bonding between members of a family by making them aware of the unhealthy behaviors of individual members , the aim of the therapy and the need for collaboration between all members towards achieving a desirable harmony that will improve overall functioning of the family as a unit. It gives a clarity to all members of the family involved in therapy as to how each member is contributing to the dysfunctional state.

There are different treatment or therapy models utilized by family therapist based on the nature of the problem, availability of family members and complexity of the family dysfunctioning. The cooperation of the members is a vital component for the success of the family therapy.
